How to Use This Book

"Teaching the Folk Guitar" (TFG) can be thought of as the teacher's edition to Learning the Folk Guitar (LFG) the student manual.
"Teaching the Folk Guitar"consists of 8 Lesson Plans plus all of the material in the appendixes. Each lesson plan is divided into four distinct phases:
  1. Preparation
  2. Discussion
  3. Activity
  4. Summary

1. Preparation

The preparation phase is divided into two sections Before Your Students Arrive, and When Your Students Arrive. It advises the instructor on the particulars of preparing each lesson and gives insights into aspects of teaching guitar to a group such as:

  • arranging the class seating
  • making certain your instrument is in tune
  • having any tuning device in good working order
  • tuning and inspecting each guitar

    2. Discussion

The next phase, Discussion, will outline a brief lecture period before the lesson activities begin. With the exception of the first lesson which will naturally require an extended greeting and course overview lecture, each Discussion phase will generally follow a similar structure from lesson to lesson. This structure includes two major points of discussion

  • Lesson review
  • Problem areas

    Lesson review
This is simply an outline and a brief explanation of the important topics that were given in the previous lessons. Going over the Lesson review should bring everybody up to date. It is, also, the time to put emphasis on any important concepts that were given.

  • Problem areas
This section will prepare you to answer any questions about the previous material which might be giving someone difficulty. It will also go over some of the physical problems a beginner might encounter such as sore fingertips and muscles and will suggest answers to some of the more common questions asked in this regard.

    3. Activity

The activity phase will naturally take up the majority of the class time. Before beginning new material you will see a list of activities for that particular lesson along with the page numbers for quick reference. This is followed by a brief at a glance......... explanation with tips on how to present it, and its importance in the course.
Each Activity is numbered. The headings can be found in the left margin with its corresponding Objective: The page number in the guitar headstock icon will refer to the exact location in the student manual (Learning the Folk Guitar) where the information will be found.

Top Page 21 In this case you would have them refer to the top of page 21.

To make it easier for the instructor and the student to find the correct page, each page number in Learning the Folk Guitar will be placed in the guitar headstock icon. That is to say that any page number in an icon in this book will correspond to the page in the student manual.

All of the material contained in Learning the Folk Guitar including the appendixes is included in the teacher's manual. The explanations will be found on the same page or on a facing page for easy reference.

All of the correct answers to the "ear training" exercises are provided.

    4. Summary

The summary at the end of each lesson will go over the major points that were presented. These are the particular areas that should be stressed for practice. The Final Thoughts section will give you, the teacher, more insight on how to present the summary to your students.

    Course Preview
As it should be, one lesson builds upon the other, You can easily see this by referring to the at a glance......... section toward the beginning of the lesson plans.
Here you will find a quick preview of the important new topics and activities for each lesson. Take the time to go through the at a glance......... section lesson by lesson to get a get a good idea of how the course is laid out.

A quick preview will show you that we start by giving some basic music theory and progress from simple one-finger chords playing familiar two-chord songs using a simple downward brush stroke all the way up to barre chords and movable chords using bass runs and syncopated fingerstyle, arpeggios. You should be familiar with most of the material well enough to communicate it to your class.

If you are not familiar with some aspect of the course perhaps a little research in another source will clear up the details. You may, also, find the answer on the CD that accompanies this course.

    About the CDs

The two CDs that accompany this manual should be used only as a guide to presenting the material. The discs begin with the basic exercises and songs found in Lesson #1. These are presented to give you an idea of the tempo that should be employed when demonstrating or playing the examples with the class.

Other important material on the CDs include the left hand exercises, specific right hand instructions, examples of new chord progressions and song arrangements plus the complete "ear training" exercise instructions.

In addition, I have included all the songs, guitar tablatures and chord progression material in the appendixes.
