Recent Times
Throughout the 1980's and early '90's Phil & Gaye were members of the North Carolina Touring Roster.
It was during this time that they released their double CD Phil and Gaye Johnson - Live "Mountain Flower / "The Lost Broadcast" (ASTER 2001/2002)
It was soon followed by a special project release Folk Songs from Carl Sandburg's The American Songbag - Vol. 1 (ASTER 2003)
In 1990, Phil embarked on a solo career as a storyteller, folk poet and multi -
instrumentalist with his production of Up in the Mountains, Its Lonesome All the Time, a unique folk music/theater experience which celebrates traditional Appalachian music, dance, literature, poetry and its multi-cultural origin.
Phil's storytelling efforts lead him to create a style he calls SongTelling
which can be heard on his 1995 release SongTelling in the Blue Ridge - "Beyond the Blue Mountain" (ASTER 3001)
In 1993 Phil was selected for membership on the N.C. State Arts Council
Touring Roster as a solo performer . His travels have taken him to: schools,
universities, children's theater festivals, senior centers, business meetings
and conferences. He has, also, conducted school residencies, and teacher workshops in
folk music, songwriting and group guitar instruction.
Phil has published a beginning guitar
instruction manual for teachers.
Published by Euphoria Falls Publishing Co.,
Teaching the Folk Guitar; a Step by Step Method for Group
Instruction is the most comprehensive group instruction method available.
