g the Folk Guitar

The bottom three strings on the guitar E, A and D, are known as the bass strings and the notes that are played on these strings are bass notes. Chords may contain a number of bass notes. The tonic notes that are played on the bass strings are called the primary bass notes.

In addition to the primary bass note the chord may contain one or more secondary bass notes . Playing an accompaniment that switches between these primary and secondary bass notes is known as an alternating bass accompaniment. Playing chords using an alternating bass / strum right hand style opens up many creative possibilities.

Alternating Bass - D and A7th chords

1. Strike the primary bass note (D) and strum the chord (beats 1 & 2).

2. Strike the secondary bass note (A) and strum the chord (beats 3 & 4).
