Irene Goodnight
The Cuckoo

Hobo's Lullaby 4/4

I                                 IV
Go to sleep my weary hobo.
V         V-7th                 I
Let the towns go drifting by.
I                                   IV
Listen to the steel rails hummin'.
         V        V-7            I
Well,that's a hobo's lullaby.

Do not think about tommorrow.
Let tommorrow come and go.
Tonight you have a nice warm boxcar,
Free from all the ice and snow.

I know the police cause you trouble.
They make trouble everywhere.
But when you die and go to heaven,
You will find no policemen there.

Irene Goodnight 3/4

I               V-7th                  I
Irene Goodnight, Irene goodnight,
                   I-7th         IV      IIm
Good night I rene, goodnight Irene,
     V         V-7th    I
I'll see you in my dreams.

Sometimes I live in the country.
Sometimes I live in town.
Sometimes I take a great notion,
To jump in the river and drown.

I asked your mother for you,
She told me you were too young.
I wished to God I'd never seen your face.
I'm sorry you was ever born.

You cause me to weep you cause me to mourn
You cause me to leave my home.
But the very last words I heard her say was,
"Please sing me one more song."

The Cuckoo 4/4

            I                       VIm
Oh the cuckoo, she's a pretty bird
        IV                    V
She wobbles as she flies.
              I                VIm
But, she never says cuckoo
           IV                   I
'Till the fourth day of July.

Gonna build me a log cabin.
Up on the Mountain high.
So I can see my pretty babe
As she goes passing by.

Jack of diamonds, Jack of diamonds
I have Known you from old.
You have robbed me of my silver.
You have robbed me of my gold.

I've played cards in old England
I've gambled in Spain
And I'll bet you twenty dollars
I'll beat you next game.
